Summer in Perth is hot, but it’s about to get even hotter this January as RFX Competition Series announced two CrossFit Games athletes will be heading west to compete at the Summer Showdown.
Maddie Sturt and Zeke Grove (both four times CrossFit games athletes) are confirmed for the RFX Summer Showdown, which is taking place at the mega fitness facility that is ROAR Active in Bibra Lake over three spectacular days January 20-22.
The competition has seen some exciting updates this year with the inclusion of the guest competitors, along with a later start time on Saturday meaning two nights of flood-lit fitness for spectators to enjoy and a cash prize pool for the athletes totalling over $7000 for Rx Athletes.
So who will be waiting on the floor for Maddie and Zeke? Grace Walton (CrossFit Dignus), Zane Healy (CrossFit Dignus) and John Champion (Legion) are all confirmed to represent Perth.
Perth’s Grace Walton debut at Down Under Championship saw her give a dominant performance with a 4th place finish, beating USA’s Lauren Fisher who finished 5th. After only two years in the CrossFit scene, Zane also made his Down Under Championships debut with a strong performance. John Champion, now 27, has been competing at a national level for over four years and has a fresh new focus on the competition coming into the 2023 Open season.
We spoke to Maddie and Zeke about their impending trip to the west side (insert Tupac hand sign). Here’s what they had to say.
Perth Fitfam: How many times have you competed in Perth?
Maddie – Zero! I have never been to Perth before!
Zeke – This will be my third time and hopefully not my last!
Perth Fitfam: What’s your favourite thing about Perth?
Zeke – The Perth sunsets are pretty amazing…
Perth Fitfam: Why did you want to compete in Perth? What attracted you to the Summer Showdown?
Maddie – I have always wanted to see the other side of the country, I’ll take any opportunity to escape the Melbourne weather haha.
Zeke – I’ve got a lot of good friends in Perth so that is always a major positive but the CrossFit community vibe is high in Perth and it’s always a good time.
Perth Fitfam: What is exciting you most about the competition?
Maddie – I am keen to have another awesome experience within the CrossFit community before the 2023 season starts
Zeke – Just having some fun. There’s so many young talents coming out of Perth and around the country at the moment so its cool to keep testing the old body against them all.
Have you got your eye on anyone here (competition-wise)?
Maddie – Yeah I hear Zeke Grove is going down haha – I don’t really know which athletes have been confirmed, I am just coming for a good time!
Zeke – Like I mentioned above, there are so many young talents popping up so I’m just excited to get out amongst everyone.
